Franz Werner von Tamm
(Hamburg 1658–1724 Vienna) A hunting still life with poultry and a powder bag, oil on canvas, 96 x 147 cm, framed,
Trained in Hamburg, Tamm travelled at an early age to Rome, where he was associated with the flower painter, Mario Nuzzi, developing his skills under his guidance to become a master in this field. His second name, Dapper was given to him because of his membership of the artists' group, the ‘Schilderbent’. Alongside his better known flower still lifes, Tamm also painted hunting still lifes, as can be seen in this painting, which were influenced by contemporaries, such as Jan Fyt. The red ammunition bag in this painting appears in several of his works. After he was called to Vienna in 1695 by Emperor Leopold I he was primarily active at the Imperial court. For this reason, Vienna has a particularly rich collection of the works of this artist. The Galerie der Fürsten Liechtenstein alone owns 24 and the Kunsthistorisches Museum has 8 of his paintings. The painter died in 1724 as a highly esteemed Imperial court painter.
